Talking parrots incoming!
I believe that Gavin is about to start talking.
The other day, as I walked past his cage in the living room, he said, "Bird, what're you doing?" in a very clear little conure voice. With my inflections pretty spot-on. I haven't heard it since (though I've been saying it when appropriate). He's mimicked the vague cadence of human speech for a couple of years now, but just this week I've noticed that turn into distinctly different sentences with words I can almost make out.
What if the bird starts uttering sentences? I usually say something to them whenever they whistle, and if they're in the mood, I like to talk to them, but I've tried to stay vocally calm around my birds. When someone flock-calls, I usually just reply with something like, "hey, I'm over here washing the dishes."
Relatively quiet parrots appeal to me and I have mixed feelings about living with one who talks, so I haven't tried to encourage talking. It's still pretty cool. I'm very...interested, I think worry is perhaps too strong a word...in what the wee green fellow will decide to say.
