I'm also sure animals are smarter and more complex than we give them credit for. Most of them seem to be relatively bad at reducing things to symbols and then manipulating the symbols, which is our great strength. But while that means they may not have the complex language we have, it also means they're spared our particularly human form of blindness; our tendency to think that the symbol IS the real thing it represents.
