We are that which can be soft yet proud

Three Days Past Solstice

Is the oak phage over?
For years, the tanoaks quietly resisted it, and mostly fell.
These woods are full of skeletons. But every year
I noted those still living, new seedlings
And so am not surprised to see them living now.

It’s late in June, three days past Solstice.
These hand-length leaves are soft and fuzzy,
tender;
they proliferate on every bough

As if to say
We are that which can be soft yet proud
And there is still newness yet to touch
On this strong and tarnished flesh.
