Hey, sweet, cultural progress!!!

Take a moment to savor this article from [livejournal.com profile] leora's journal, wherein a speaker for the BioWare software company responds beautifully to a complaint rooted in homophobia and bigotry. Moments of articulate cultural positive change make me happy. Enjoy and pass it on to preference! If you play computer games, please consider BioWare's.

LOVE it!

Some of the responses to this have made me angry - can you believe I had another neckbeard tell me that the Straight Male Gamer's complaint was "well-thought out?" hahaha yeahhhhhh

But seriously, BioWare gets so many points for this.

On the one hand, Straight Male Gamer's pretty much the very definition of a concern troll, and a rather unsubtle one at that. And young, testosterone-fueled gamers in general are a rather clueless lot. Not in the least surprised.

BioWare's response, however, was awesome. And you know MY feelings, Summer. I may be het, but I like to think I'm hep (at least occasionally). ^.^

I posted this on my FB and think it is AWESOME!!!! I don't get to play much these days (that is the problem with growing up, starting a family and continuing college... and working) but I can't wait to try this game! :D

Well, that was fun to read, particularly since I just started playing Mass Effect again.

And the person who says that the only way to please them is to restrict options for others is, if you ask me, the one who deserves it least. And that’s my opinion, expressed as politely as possible.

Hear, hear.

hahahahahaha :D

Yay! I don't play video games, but am happy to pass the word to friends who do!

The response is really well written, and I hope it makes a lot of rounds.

Yeah, I worked in the game industry for an awfully long time. Some shops are enlightened, some are actively close-minded, many are just bumbling along without giving these things much thought.

What's sad is that the troll's problem reflects many people's problem. They feel terribly threatened, and view any attempt to be inclusive to all to mean there will be less for them. The kind who, if there was a rising tide, would complain that other boats got lifted too.

"If you're not making this game for me, you're making it against me!"... however THAT works. :p

I've always loved Bioware games for their story... and relationships, especially interesting ones, diverse ones, complicated ones, make for GREAT gameplay.
