Dogs, and the way we require them to modify their behaviors.

Kyn cooked some delicious BBQ ribs the other day. No hounds, of course, were allowed to be unsupervised anywhere near the cooling meat, which makes miss Zhava very sad. She had never wished so passionately to commit a perfect crime, and it would only have taken her mere seconds to complete it.

"If only two humans were not sitting inches from me and watching me closely, I could snatch that and devour it." Also notice and contrast Coba, very near the food and yet quiet, mannerly and well hidden, because he would never even dream about grabbing a piece of meat and dashing off to a private spot behind a fuchsia bush to devour it in the event human eyes were turned away, right?

Bliss, on the opposite end of the spectrum, looks sleepy and uninterested in being anything but Her Majesty's pillow because...that's exactly what he's feeling. Nothing feigned here. The beast still doesn't much like food---if it's something really delicious (if I handed him a rib, for instance), he'll take it delicately, and only after sniffing it carefully and with great delight. Then he takes the prize and carefully nibbles it until gone, with the kind of pleasure and attention I'd expect from an appreciative foodie at a really fantastic restaurant. If I don't force feed him, he willingly eats only the minimum necessary to keep himself alive. He is otherwise perfectly healthy. It's a rare behavior problem, and while I would take it over many more common doggie behavior problems, I continually shake my head at him.

They always get rib bones when we were done, of course. Bliss will chew on his a bit for its own sake---he is at least that doglike, and will happily eat cooked food, although he loses interest if he eats the same meal more than twice in a row. He is quickly done, however, and prefers to use them as game pieces in his favorite competitions with the other dogs. Collies are so meta.

I love the expressiveness of a young hound.

And on the subject of an entirely different sort of canine malfeasance, here is Coba's submission to the hilarious dogshaming blog ( http://dog-shaming.com/ ):

I think #1 is the best, and the one I should submit, but these two are also funny:

I realize that the little incident with the ringside personalization was a while ago, but I see no reason to let him live that down. At least until he finishes his title---which he will get another chance to do next month. I think he'll do well; I'm getting better about keeping a calmer ring presence, and his fourth year has brought Coba greater focus and attention span. I've also been trying to work him on lawn in a lot of parks we don't often go to, in an effort to make mown grass full of fascinating scents less of a novelty and distraction. I am hoping we have matured as a team, but we'll test out the theory soon.

When Coba has his novice title and we are training for open? Then I'll start serious novice preparation...with Zhava. doom doom, doom doom doom.

Those pictures of the hound! That is not a dog that wishes to be a good dog. Hilarious eyes.

I am in agreement: the first dog-shaming photo, yes. But the one where he is yawning is also amusing.

That is very certainly a hound who really has no desire to be good, even a little bit. All it would have taken was a moment of turned back! I love how transparent her emotions are; when she is very excited or in conflict, as in wanting to steal food but knowing I am watching, her body may be still and compliant, but you can see her thinking through all of the minute shifting and focusing of her eyes.

Compliant as a stalking wolf, yeah.

Pretty much exactly that compliant, yeah...
