I keep meaning to write something about last weekend, and I'd better now as it's almost *next* weekend. I went to the Dickens Christmas Faire in San Franciso with Robynne, Becca, Jacob, and a friend of 'bynne's whose name I can't remember for the life of me, but she was very cool.
The traffic getting there and back was horrific (oh yes. NOW I remember why I hate cities...:P) but the event itself was great. This event is kind of like a Renfaire, only Victorian themed. I'm very Victoriana-preferential, but am nothing compared to Robynne in that respect, whose costuming skills are truly amazing. Becca and Robynne got me all dressed up in their extra costume bits, all the while protesting that this was the "crap ensemble" and that they were embarassed to admit that they'd made it. While I just bit my tongue, because though they are presently both (bloody incredible) better at sewing than they were when they made the bits in question, the stuff is still really beautiful. And the result was...rather shockingly good, actually. I'd never done the full Victorian thing til now, and...well, we can be happy about the progression of womens' place in the world that no longer has us in corsets and hoop skirts...but those things *were* pretty.
It was really cool. Pics were taken, and will be shared when developed and/or begged off of people who had digital cameras.
So for Solstice I went and rode Tristan, and had a splendid time of course, because it's impossible not to have a good time when you are with your horse, IMHO, unless you take a bad fall...and Tris has only thrown me once. It was a perfect day and we had some lovely gallops. I was wearing my new riding breeches, and remembering the first day I wore 'em. They fit at the store, but actually in use they kept sliding down and felt really odd. And then I realized why...
In accordance with a current style that I utterly hate, they're supposed to be cut low on the hip. Ok fashion, fine, but...*low cut equestrian breeches?????* What, so I can flash my satin thong undies at the judge in a horse show?? Of all the bloody impractical, stupid things!
But I had to laugh. Becuase I'd just spent the weekend being all excited and happy about recreating a style that went out in the 1800s and should probably be allowed to rest in peace, cheerfully buried with a stake of holly through its heart. And then I bitch about the impracticality of anyone who'd even *think* about designing and marketing low-rider breeches.
Ah, hypocracy and double standards. Amusing, neh?
