It still makes me giggle to read 'not for human consumption' printed on the packaging of frozen rats. I mean, do you really need to tell us this? And...why not? I mean, if I WANTED to eat this frozen rat, is there a reason I should not? I mean, I don't want to be feeding Delphi substandard rats. I want my little guy eating only superior-quality, human-grade rats...nothing but the best.

(Yes, yes. I am fully aware that it's probably printed there because of a statutory requirement or an FDA regulation. Still. LOLS).

This is so neat. Of course, anyone who spends any time at all getting to know a group of horses becomes aware that they have complex social interactions including evolving friendships and rivalries. Their voices are as easy or more so to tell apart than peoples', so it follows that they know each other by sound perfectly well and would be as surprised as we if a family member called across the room in a stranger's voice.

Having it examined by science is really awesome, though.

"This is the first clear empirical demonstration that in the normal process of identifying social companions of its own species, a non-human animal is capable of cross-modal individual recognition."

Thanks for the way keen link, [livejournal.com profile] hakeber!
