wow, I've not heard that story! I wash them thoroughly before I bake them, but there is probably some trace salts remaining. I don't know how much of the wood they actually ingest; mostly they make it into sawdust, but it's definitely something to keep in mind. They get yearly bloodwork done, and salt issues have never come up.
