Returned from the mountain
So, I am freshly returned from a week solo backpacking in the Ansel Adams portion of the Sierras. (well, solo save for my merles). It was glorious and I needed it a lot; this summer has certainly posed its challenges both emotionally and financially, and I just haven't been able to get away before now. Still, there's something incredibly special about being in the mountains in fall. I am so lucky.
Also glad to be back. Miz Kaya is licking the inside of my ear and making happy bird chirring noises at me, and as she is being gentle with her wickedly sharp parrot beak, I'm letting her for the time being. Unfortunately, Gavin plucked all of the damned contour feathers on his breast out, since he wasn't allowed out of his cage in my absence. I need to figure out something else to do with them when I'm away.
I brought y'all back photos! Lots of them; I will probably cut this into a few posts.

This trail spent more time following a river than some, but it was worth it (and not just because this trail ALSO featured a hot spring!) This is the San Joaquin river, looking so inviting.

Saw no bears, just the signs of their existence.

Bliss enjoyed his puppy trip! I really get to know them in the woods, learn new things about them and appreciate their subtlety and character. Bliss is beginning his transition from puppy to young adult, and it's neat to be finding out what sort of dog I raised. He's gentle and inquisitive, and likes to stick very close to me. I am extremely fond.

Each tree has its character.

I would never have seen this perfectly camouflaged little caterpillar if it hadn't moved.

Coba had fun, too! He knows exactly what's going on and has, if anything, a bit of an attitude about it. He has definitely outgrown most of his puppy shyness; although he can be wary about people he doesn't know well, a breed trait, and can certainly be a bit quirky, Coba is anything but shy when it's just us.

The streams and lakes were so full of trout. I LOVE trout, lots and lots and lots. They're so beautiful. (And tasty, but I haven't got a pole anymore, and solo trips are heavy enough as it is). More troutpix in a later post.

The fall colors were lovely.

I saw blue grouse no less than three times this trip, and was able to photograph a flock once. I've never seen them before, and grouse or no, I think I will be unable to think of them as anything but 'High Sierra Mountain Chickens.' They move just like chickens and look a lot like them, and their cluck is more resonant than a chicken's...but it's still a cluck. Awesome birds.
