There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings or walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible.

Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.... It is a fragile circle. But it goes round and round without end.

—Suzanne Clothier, Bones Would Rain From The Sky

I grieve for your grief, of course, but I am a little awed at how deeply I will miss Jezebel. Last of her lineage, wolf-hybrid raised among wolf-hybrids, and raised well -- she was a rare and beautiful animal. Complex and quirky. Powerfully clear in her ability to communicate with people, but content with what she got out of life. She was amazing. I am profoundly sorry for the loss of her, and the loss of what she represented to you.

I was lucky to know her. She touched my life in small and subtle ways, perhaps, but the imprint is one that will last.
