Law, horses and X men comics....

So I don't usually go on about legal stuff here, but I have to mention that I finished and sent the discovery responses I've been working on for the last. 4. bloody. weeks. (not counting the entire week I was out sick :P) and I was utterly GLEEFUL to see all 200+ pages of it LEAVE my office and back to the smooth-talkin' *&^%$#! lawyer who sent it to us...hoooyeah, go away little discovery, go awaaaayyyy.

I'm feeling a lot better, but I'm still coughy. Did I mention that my flu turned into an upper-resperatory infection? It did, and I still have about a week of antibiotics, drat it. But I was well enough to ride Jhala a little, which made her happy. Gotta love that li'l mare. I saw Tristan, too, who is at a different stable, but by then I was coughing again, so I didn't take him out. He was disappointed, which makes me sad. Must ride Tris at some point this week. I swear, he's the kindest horse I've ever met.

Got a big box of X-comics...several months' worth of all the stuff I can't subscribe to. So much fun was had. Reviews, with teh minor spoilers:

X-23 is intelligent, thoughtful and very, very sad. A quiet exploration of how abuse begets itself and how the lies we tell ourselves will always come back to kill us, with interest. It's also a very interesting "women's issues" sort of story, a very female POV, which is kind of unusual in X-men comics. I was still thinking about it, and upset about it, long after I'd read the issues, which is unusual for teh X-fluff. Poor little X-23. And it occurs to me that Wolverine saddled Kitty and Ray with her as an unwanted third roomate in the recentmost 'Uncanny' so that she can see firsthand what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like, 'cos ye gods know she has never seen one up until this point. (And yeah. Kitty and Rachel are just friends. Sure.)

Gambit, by contrast, is pure fluff. But it is entertaining, clever fluff. With some neat, tricky plotting, a character I really wish they hadn't killed off because he was delightful, and a few moments that made me laugh out loud. And a very oh-so-sexy Cajun, of course. mmmmm Cajun. It was a nice chaser for the deeply dark X-23.

The latest Unlimited contained nothing particularly incredible, and the Sage story only convinced me that Claremont is the only writer to date who "gets" Sage. Although he's obviously crushing on the character, which is OK because I am too, but I shudder to think what might happen if any other writer gets his hands on her long-term. There's no way that Emma would have to tell Sage that they were telling silly date stories in order to distract the super-claustrophobe-stressing Storm. Sage may be cold, but she can read human interactions perfectly well and we've seen her hyper-aware of what Storm's doing at all times, because as we saw in X-treme she's a touch obsessive on the subject of her, uh, leader.

I haven't read the Jubilee issues yet, but I'm told it's cancelled. Ah, well. get Jubes back to NY where she belongs, and bloody graduate her from High School already. How many years has she been a teen? Ah wait, I forgot, we're in Marvel U time here.

X-men has a new writer, thank goodness. The first 'Golgotha' issue was really good, nice n morbid. Larocca's artwork is as always exquisite. I think I'll give up the battle and decide to like Emma now.

And the most exciting one is the first 'Phoenix: Endsong" which I've so been waiting for. OMG GORGEOUS. Some truly stunning artwork, and already I'm in love with the story, though I think that it will be tragic. (fine by me). Worth the price of admission just for the sight of Jean Grey's mouldering corpse clawing its way out of the grave. (maniacal cackles.) OMG. DEAD JEAN!!!!!!!! And Phoenix beauty. Yep, phoenix obsessed am I.

I need a phoenix icon, but I can't decide which of the three I have to dump for it. Maybe the dog/cat lovers one, it's so funny in the larger version but you can't really see it in the icon. What do we think?

And on that note, I leave you with a very amusing meme that makes me miss my renfaire days. I think I need to do faire again this year.

Town prostitute? Oy!

And the last one died....... ;)

*giggle* yeah, we apparently need to take better care of our prostitutes in my town. I'll work on passing an amendment.

I haven't been following the X comics in weeks. Do you happen to know what's going on in Astonishing? I'm interested to know how things are going with Kitty and Peter. And see what Emma is up to.

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2005-02-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, Astonishing is just too fun. Kay, you asked for them, spoilers:

Peter is a little distant and standoffish, though I don't think we can really blame him for being just a bit post-traumatic-stressy at this point. Kitty is afraid that she pushed him too fast, too soon, and is fretting a bit; they aren't an instant couple, which I feel is good.

Wing committed suicide in the Danger Room, and it was so very sad, and definite suggestions have been made that his death will herald Something Very Bad. I predict that it is going to set off the cataclysim which destroys the Breakworld...so fitting, since it was Ord who stole his powers.

We don't know what Emma was scheming yet, or what she has planned for Kitty. In X-men, however, she has a very interesting role, and she was lovely in the last few issues of Uncanny.

Any time ya want the X-spoilers, I be your girl. ;D

Thankies. I don't really follow the others really, just umm...very shallowly. Well you could say I thumb through them.

I do try to read Emma's book in the bookstores (I'm cheap :P) and I sort of knew it was the black girl doing all that. Plus reading Mystique and the one which HAD Juggernaut but I just haven't gotten a chance.

I haven't followed Emma's book much, but I'm getting it in digest form. I was hoping that it would cover her transition into becoming the White Queen, but I guess Marvel couldn't go there with an "age" book. :P Which has now been cancelled, along with Mystique and Jubilee. Sad. Sigh. They should can the obnoxious Rogue comic and keep Mystique. (I so hate saying that since Rogue is one of my favorites...)

I read X-comics more deeply than I had initially intended, but being the obsessive personality that I am I can't really help it. There is so little that I do casually. I have the subscriptions to Astonishing, Uncanny, plain-ol-X-men, Excalibur, Wolverine and Mystique. Plus I read all the comics mentioned above when I can get 'em. And have plenty of opinionated and oftentimes snarky things to say about the lot. ;D

I'm so glad you got your comic box! And that you are finally on the mend. I was so worried for you!!!! >^@@^<

Yes, Endsong and the Golgotha story lines, yeeeeesssssss. Gorgemous artwork and stealthy edgy hurts pretty storylines with EMMA in them *purrapurrapuuurrr*

I don't usually pickup any X-men except the Joss Whedon title, because me poor! But I am for Golgotha and Emma, as I picked up the Chasing Hellfire for Emma, and Tessa. *whimper* Need Emma fix!!!

Endsong was just too damn beautiful to pass by. And, yes, Emma was in it, and looking gorgeous.

Marvel as a company sucks. They cancelled Emma before we got to the GOOD PART ... where she joins the Hellfire Club. They cancelled Mystique. And they don't ship on time for the other titles. And they are suing City of Heroes. grrrrr...

Tomorrow is comic book day. sigh...
Don't think much will come in for me tomorrow though *heavy sigh*

heh...my theory on the whole issue is that Emma is the new Wolverine...you know, the character who appears in every single title?? *snicker* Emma really is yummy in Golgotha. Her interactions with Rogue were great. And what a hilarious bitch. ;D

I'm not convinced that Marvel (which, yes, is evil) would have showed Emma joining the HC in that comic. It, like Jubilee, is one of the 'Age' line, designed for bitty kids to be able to read it safely. (which made me wtf?? when I saw. Emma Frost, teen role model? I mean, she IS, I'm sure, for lots of teens, but not deliberately on Marvel's part . ;) Forgive me while I choke on my ginger ale.) Can you see a HC story in an Age title? Or at least a good one?

Regardless, they seem to be killing all the spur titles. Other than Gambit and Rogue...the latter of which I can assuredly live without.

And Emma was utterly gorgeous in Endsong. I love the Phoenix's line about "everyone thinks you're cold, but I know better." And Emma to Scott: "Jean Grey is DEAD."

Although Dead!!!Jean crawling moulderingly from her grave like one of Anita Blake's zombies just made me grin ear to ear.
