Yeah, I saw that a few days ago. Neat stuff, and combined with the underwater footage from some time ago... :D
How long before we have them swooping around in giant aquariums I wonder... *snicker* Probably around the same time someone gets a great white that doesn't die or try to break out.
Actually, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has successfully kept a great white shark for a number of months. They found a young injured female two years ago and kept her for about nine months, during which she grew nearly two feet. They let her go when she started munching on her tankmates. (She'd never been intended as a permanent exhibit, anyway.) They captured a second great white last August, this one a juvenile male, and kept him until January. They're planning to capture another one later this summer.
We need to make a pilgrimage there some time soon, with or without the shark. (Although 'with' would be awesome).
I just wish they would figure out how to keep *any* squid alive in captivity for long. Octopodes and cuttlefish are really tricky to keep, but us cephalophiles have to content ourselves with them. I've never seen a live squid, alas, just pictures and dead ones.
I was surprised that the scientist in the article had a low opinion of this beast's probable intelligence. The little squids are really bright.
