OK, so having a flighted conure is really, really cute. Something about having the little beast fly to my finger when called, or spontaneously flying across the room to me, is pretty darn heartwarming. We will see if I can manage to live safely with an unclipped parrot, but for now, Gavin remains in posession of his primaries.

I just wish Kaya's would grow in. They've tried, but she attempts to take off and falls like a potato often enough that she knocks them out when it's just one lone primary with no others to support it. It can take a parrot years to recover from a truly bad clip, and poor Kaya has one mother of a bad clip. Trimming *all* of a poicephalus' primaries down below the secondaries gives the bird no lift at all, basically, not enough even to glide a little.

Meanwhile, non bird related, big changes happening here. I'll write about them when I figure out what to say.

*Arch the minigryph flutters across the room, cat-perches on a Jackel shoulder, and peeps up at her?*

*gives Jackel a strong mrrr and leans into crestscritches!*

I'm a pretty gently affectionate sort of guy, and I do love critters. Please keep posting your animal stories...they always cheer me up a little.

And I am as ever very, very glad that you and I met. Couldn't ask for a better friend. :>

Hello, been menaing to tell you I love your icon. Gryphs are so cool... but a minigryph now that is a fun idea!

I actually have two gryphon forms, a "lapgryphon" form (not too much bigger then a cat) and a "Giant Gryphon" form about 10 meters from beak to tailbase. Each of those has a pretty long story behind it. :)

My gryphon is rather large. Wing tip to wing tip is 31ft. You kind hide a horse under him. :D

My other main character (that has never made it to LJ I have to admit) is a critter I call a wozelle. She has the hide quarters like a gazelle, front quarters like a mountain lion, wings, head is also like a gazelle but with canines. Oh yes, she is a dusky blue with slightly darker blue patterns across her hide.

Niiiice. Both of 'em -- the wozelle's pretty unique, and the gryphon sounds very nice.

(One of Arch's best friends is an Aussie who calls himself the Silver Brumby. His little horsey character hides under Arch's wing alot, and coined the nickname Fluff the Magic Gryphon for him. :)

Partial trim of new feathers?

Here's a crazy idea: clip the new primary feathers as they grow in, but not as short. They might be less vulnerable to damage that way. And when she gets a full set of short feathers, she can start gliding a bit and stop knocking them out.

(In other news, I met a woman in San Mateo a few days ago with conures in the backseat and a "Lady with a sword" sticker on her window. I almost asked her if she knew you. :-)

That's actually not a bad idea. They would still be vulnerable, but maybe the trim would help. I may try that if she grows a 'single feather' again.

Hehhh...the lady you met sounds fun. Yay for travelling with conures and swords!!! (I haven't actually got a sword, but I do have many knives...)
