woohoo, wednesday, week half over. yay. It rained *hard* last night, furious and beautiful and loud. The creeks in the forest will all be full now, and I look forward to walking among them.

Also, got comic books in the mail! I'll mention here that I am *really* loving Excaliber for its quiet, haunted, careful story, its really 'human' characters, and its understated pathos. Magneto is just...utterly beautiful here, so lovely. The Prof is also very good, a realistic guy that sometimes I like and sometimes I don't, but you have to respect. Moira's ghost as a recurrant char is absolutely wonderful. The whole thing is a little slow, but it feels like its building with care. Prrr.

And...ordered my *Gargoyles* 1st season DVD yesterday!! 8D I realize that I have not ranted on the subject of this show, one of my most favorite and deepest obsessions, here for a while, but let me for a moment plug this...it's a beautiful thing, this show, and we're trying to support the franchise, which Disney sometimes seems to like to ignore. Buy the DVD! It is awesome! And they make great gifts...

Xmen Comics, the quiet addiction...

So this was going to be a response to Alexandria's comment in the previous entry, but I thought, hey, just make it its own thing and all, it's gonna be long enough...

So, X-men comics. Serious soap opera, they grow on you like fungus and they seem to proliferate just as quickly. I often just shake my head at myself for this habit, but hey, there are worse ones, and I do so enjoy them. Aside from Excalibur, which I purred about before, here's what I'm reading at the moment and what I think of it (with maybe some mild spoilers):

Uncanny X-men: The core X-title, and at the moment, really tasty. It contains Sage, which biases me, because Sage has recently eclipsed Rogue as my favorite X-men character, and I really love her despite the fact that she is an awful retcon. It has its weak bits, like a tendency to rush its story, but then that's my usual complaint. Rachel's characterization makes little sense to me in places---she seems awfully, well, young for all the darkness that she's been through. Strong bits include very fun and compassionate characterizations of nearly everyone else. And did I mention it has Sage?

Astonishing X-men: the pretender to the throne. It's really extremely good, and its moody, atmospheric art and coloring are exemplary. I'm still miffed that Colossus got resurrected, though, even though the act was accomplished with exquisite grace. He was so much better dead.

X-Men: Hugely mixed bag. On the one hand I loathe! the handling of Gambit/Rogue. (more on that later.) It has some nice bits, though, and Salvador Larocca's art is, as it always is, gorgeous. If it weren't for him, though, I might drop this one. I still may let my subscription lapse.

Mystique: what started as a fluffy and kind of silly spy story is growing into something darker and meatier. You have to love Mystique and her own brand of, uh, morality. I do enjoy how it ties into Excaliber, and I'm very torn about whether I want her to succeed in assasinating the Prof. I can totally see and sympathize with both of their points of view, despite the fact that they are diametrically opposed and irreconcilable, which makes for a very dynamic story. Hey, shake things up a little, kill him dead!

Wolverine: hooked me on the 'Coyote Crossing' storyline, which is OMG gorgeous and worth getting as a TPB, but has been spiralling downhill since. While I enjoyed the Native, her storyline and convenient death are annoying as all get-out, even more so because parts of it are really good. (Native survived an attack by Sabertooth, another attack by a zillion disposable bad guys, a helicopter crashing on her, radioactive vivisection, all of which she healed from handily...and then Sabertooth killed her? WTF?) the current storyline is kind of fun: even though I prefer to ignore the rest of the Marvel U, seeing a posessed, undead Wolvie slice-n-dice his way through it is great. Still, *when* does this happen vis-a-vis the other books? I really wish more of them would tie together like Mystique and Excalibur.

Rogue: I love Rogue, I hate the comic. While it has its good parts, like beautiful art and this scene where a blind Gambit hitchhikes from New York to Mississippi which is utterly hilarious, it seems to ignore all of the wonderful development and maturing of the character that was accomplished in Xtreme. And Rogue's whole backstory being raised by Mystique, which should figure a lot more in this story. And did I miss where they explained how and when Rogue got her powers back?!?!?!

I have the first Gambit, which I want more of only the local bookstore dosen't seem to be carrying it. It was really good. The first Jubilee is also promising. And I love NYX, though I only have one issue (see Gambit :P)though I hear it's been canned. X23 is getting her own series, apparently, has anyone seen it who's willing to rec it for me?

so yeah, comics, too bloody many of em. Fun, though.
