Ok guys, get your hankies. I have a genuine Heartwarming Cute Cat Story, right here right now. A weird one, but nonetheless full of d'awwwwwwwwwww.

And if you don't want the whole long story, have any of you ever had a cat who had brownish discoloring in the whites of its eyes? I've seen it in some friends' older cats over the years but never asked. Is it an age thing? Possible sign of liver or other organ dysfunction? The cat's iris is unaffected, but the stain is around its edge in the white part.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] furtech for letting me know about "Mongrels." It's a BBC sitcom with 'Simpspons'-ish humor featuring animal puppets, and it is quite hilarious.

I may have laughed and laughed. But now I know the proper methods by which to skillfully massage an opossum.

(omg, that animal is so cute).

It's not just my ducks that were kinky as heck. No really, it's all of them. Here's a fascinating article about the weird sexual proclivities of ducks. There's video.

"There comes a time in every science writer’s career when one must write about glass duck vaginas and explosive duck penises."

Sadly, none of mine survived the winter's raccoon predations, but when the storms stop, I am going to build a bigger and more secure coop in which everyone can be more easily locked up nightly. At that point I'll probably add another chicken hen and perhaps three more duck hens. Even though their penises are in fact fascinating, I'm declining to keep another drake at the moment.

Of course, this just begs the issue of furry porn. Donald, we never knew.

And if that wasn't enough weird biology for one morning, have some solar powered slugs.

I want to go backpacking in the Philippines now. Giant potentially rat-eating pitchers. Bliss.

Appropos of nothing, Adopt one today! and Adopt one today! and Adopt one today! and Adopt one today! are chewing on your bandwidth. I hope that Adopt one today! hatches into a male, since I have females of its species already.

I know that this is the fault of a computer, but it's still cracking me up. The ad banner for this company, which sells lab animal research equipment, just came up on a virtual pet site which is probably mostly visited by little kids, with a smattering of weird fur geeks like me. When I was ten and of the age when I'd have really obsessed over this site, it might have actually caused me some real upset.

Not that I believe that anyone old enough to read should be shielded from this ethical problem, but in context I find it kind of morbidly hilarious. I have these awful images of my cute little chicken smoothie pets in sterile plastic lab cages awaiting vivisection now. Especially since rats and bunnies are two of the species depicted on the site. Oops. ;D

And as long as I'm here, indulge me. Isn't this one just adorable? I'm all for morbid, stitchy Gaiman-inspired CS pets. Maybe next month, they'll do obviously experimented-on critters.

It's been a hard couple of weeks for the Jackel, over here. I really, truly think that a fish pedicure would be just the thing to relax me. This would almost be worth a trip to the D.C. area...but come on, I live in *California* for goodness' sake. There has to be a fishy spa opening here soon. I will be patient. Maybe I will email this link to the local spas or something.

Because, c'mon, being nibbled upon by small fish is like the most wonderful sensation ever, or at least up there in my top 20. Usually, procuring this experience involves holding very still in cold rivers and waiting for the trout to arrive. While the wilderness approach can never be replaced, I believe that there could be much to say in favor of a nice warm footbath, with fishies. Hedonism takes many strange forms, after all.

Also, there is the phrase: "full-body fish treatment". Mrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I like the sound of that.

Who's with me, here?
