So this morning, I was taking a shower and noticed that what I believed to be a small banana slug was in there with me. No big, we get banana slugs in the house regularly, and I figured that this little guy just came up the drain. I love our local redwood forest slugs, and watch them with the happy avidity that a lot of people lavish on wild birds, because they are just so cute and nifty. And hey, nothing says redwood forest like a banana slug, and that is my preferred habitat as well. I know, I should have gone to UC Santa Cruz instead of Berkeley.

or just google image search on banana slugs. Cute, neh?)

so, you can imagine my dismay to find, when I reached down to pick hir up for a return to the wild, that my showering companion was in fact a non-native garden slug! augh, aghast!! Only, this was a *huge* specimen, the largest I have ever seen...like I said, I thought that it was a baby banana.

My biological question of the afternoon is, is it possible for the two species to interbreed? I would imagine not, if not for genetic differences than for the rather...unique...sexual morphology of our native beast. I've been able to find no literature on it.

the interloper was fed summarily to the ducks. All ducks adore slugs and snails.

So on a completely unrelated note, happy Solstice, everyone. I have been having a rather unsettled season thus far, and the solstice morning and work day were freaky and hectic. But Chris and I had an awesome dinner and afternoon.
