Wicked

Ok, so I need to rec a novel I just read, which would be 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire. A retelling of the Wizard of Oz from the POV of the, in this version not so Wicked Witch of the West, it's actually one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's subtle, beautifully written, thought provoking in the extreme, and pretty sexy to boot. Femslashy, even, in a huge albiet subtle way. read, read, read. I should warn, though, that this is a SAD story. I mean, the reader has to know this before even picking up the book because (assuming that the reader knows anything about Wizard of Oz) you know she gets melted in the end and this author really makes you like her, but how she gets there and what happens is...ouch. (For those who've read it...OMG, Elphaba and Glinda. And Fiyero...! *cries*)

This is a dark, extremely dark book. It managed to really hurt my feelings, and most of you guys know that I mercilessly glory in dark and horrible stories that thrash the living daylights out of their beautiful, sympathetic characters. But this one actually managed to break through to my tender, bunny-fur-lined inner psyche and make me really wince. Repeatedly. ;) So yeah, it gets major paws-up from th' little Jackel.

Thanks [livejournal.com profile] allaine for the rec; I'd meant to read it for a couple of years before you recced it, but yours (and happening into a discount copy of the book) tipped me over into actually doing it. And [livejournal.com profile] alexandria24, I am definitey kicking myself for not seeing the Broadway version when it was in San Francisco. At present I'm listening to some of the music, and I am curious to hear opinions from anyone who's seen it. It's clear that they glossed over all the early part of the book, (disposing of most if not all of it in the overture) and while I understand how time constraints would force that, doing so would...well...change everything. It also seems considerably less dark than the book, especially with regards to the Wizard. But I love the voice of the woman playing Elphaba. She has this sort of vulnerable soprano tenderness and brittle strength that, having just read the book, makes my heart do this little breaky thing.

yeah, read. read, read.
