You know, I'm not fond of ants. I minded the local invaders a lot less before I discovered that the little nasties that plague houses throughout California and beyond are actually Argentina natives that have slowly invaded, killing off native ants and lots of other insects and forming one enormous meta-colony that, because of genetic similarity, dosen't present the kind of territorial control that colonies would have on one another in their natural habitat. Researching these things is fascinating and scary. I miss the big, slow, innocuous native ants of my bioregion, dammit.
I like them even LESS, however, when they MAKE COLONIES IN MY STUFF! This weekend, I came to the very unpleasant realization that they had nested in the motor of my small, desktop fish tank, the one I keep a Betta in. I discovered this when I fed him and noticed the SEETHING CARPET OF ANTS on the surface of his water! Ok, so it wasn't QUITE as bad as the colony I found below Delphi's tank awhile back, which was NASTY, but this wasn't good. It isn't good when you could measure the *mass* of ants. And there were larvae.
Ew! Ew! Ew! Ew!
...and Lucy apparently also has a colony in her alarm clock. Can we all just EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW at this point?!?!?!?!?!?!
