EDIT: Happy St. Patrick's! My brother is making corned beef. He likes to cook. Dude, I score.

Beneath yon cut lurks 'Light and Fire', a little comic I did back in 2006. Though I like to think my art has improved since then, there remains a lot about it that I still like, and it's probably one of the better things I've managed to write. It saw print in Genus 76, but despite this it isn't actually porn; it's barely erotica, even. It is a bit sad, though, so warnings for that.

Which brings me to another point. I don't think that I'll be using the special adult filter on this journal any longer. When I'm posting furry porn, I'll friends-lock it, but you're all grownups, and I prefer to think that you can choose not to click the link if you don't care to see the juicy stuff. This is really about LJ emblazoning 'Danger, could contain adult content!!!!!!!!!!!!' in big red letters over my journal when one isn't logged in. I don't necessarily disagree with this policy, but neither do I think I've ever created any porn so dubious that it deserved to be censored twice.

...well okay maybe just that one time...

Anyhow, this is also my first attempt to embed here from Deviant Art. Please let me know if you encounter problems with this, and here it is on FA if you prefer. If anyone knows if there is a bit of code, as there is on FA, that allows the reader to scroll easily through a comic, please tell me. I'd really like to get 'Bone Shard' up on DA too, but only if there's a device in place to make the thing reader-friendly; it's too long, otherwise.

And about 'Bone Shard.' I have a little bit of artist guilt about its inconsistency; I wish I could be one of those people who get their whole webcomic out twice a week reliably for three years until it's done, other than that one week they had to take off for their triple coronary bypass surgery. But really, I'm not. I tend to work in obsessive little fits and starts, with a background level of slow consistency. I am 98% confident in my ability to complete this novel in a timely fashion and update with relative regularity. There is a special hell reserved for comics artists who begin a story, obtain reader interest and then fail to complete, and I'm already once guilty of that particular sin. (There are several people who still remember 'Kettjarra' and wish I'd finish, and I've actually tried, but it's been so long and I've changed so much that I just don't think I can. I'm really sorry. I don't believe I still get approached by people at cons about this).

At any rate, 'Bone Shard' is outlined and scripted through the dramatic heart-rending finale, and if a redwood tree falls on my house tomorrow and I go squish, whoever gets custody of my gmail account should post it so you can at least know. ;) Thankfully, we aren't there now, and I have a bunch of Bone Shard pages coming up as soon as I get them ready to post.

For now, there's this comic.

The idea of the phoenix being a little finch still makes me giggle.

Beautiful!

I don't think I'd call it sad, though it made me cry a little, at the end.

Considering some of the other stories this was paired with in Genus 76 (I actually have a copy), I think the editors must have been in a literary mood that month.

It's a lovely story, though. Genuinely touching, which is hard to do in that little space.

The ability to tell a story, without telling all of it, is a knack that I truly admire. It's important to leave some things unsaid.

This a a BEAUTIFUL story. Really, truly beautiful; the emotion is just pouring out of every page! Every word and every image counts for so much...

I don't know which is my favorite, page 6 or page 9, but it's definitely one of the two. Page 6 for the possible-explanation--really suits the myth, btw--but page 9 for the sheer bittersweet joy in discovering life and what it means for her.

*pounces on the storyteller for multiple huggles*
