Total Eclipse
Oct. 28th, 2004 06:58 amLast night's total lunar eclipse was the first one I have ever seen. Having an eclipse and a full moon has to be unusual.
First, we drove up to the top of a local hill that is pretty treeless and watched the moon slowly disappear behind its rusty shadow. I did not experience the profound unease described by Annie Dillard in her essay 'Total Eclipse' in 'Teaching a Stone to Talk', but I must admit that my first glimpse of it was a little shocking. (and Dillard was referring to a total solar eclipse, which is probably a little stranger.) After we drove back, I leashed up the dogs and walked out into the woods to this place on one of my favored trails that's on top of a cliff and has a great view. I moonwatched a little more there. Getting there was a little spooky...it was *dark*, the trail follows, as I mentioned, the top of a steep cliff, and I did not bring a light; better to rely on night eyes. You see more. And I know this trail really well. Still, wierd. I saw lots of bioluminescent fungus in the leaf litter. I love bioluminescent things with a deep passion, and it was very exciting, but I hardly ever see the fungus in my own back yard because I don't tend to go walking in the dead of night. Maybe that is something I should change. The natural world is a thing of such sublime beauty, and we miss so much of it just living our normal routines.
So Pouncival update! We made another pilgrimage to the vet yesterday. The ulcer in his cornea is still very much there...but...it is healing, and the vet liked what he saw. He put this flourescent dye in Pounce's eye and then looked at it in the dark with a blacklight, which was cool. Apparently, when the ulcer closes, possibly in another week or so, he's going to put Pounce on a cortrazone (sp) ointment to prevent scarring in the cornea, and clarify it. Given that the last time we spoke, the vet was still worried about the eye rupturing, I am very happy.
And more on cats. From AlexGarg's journal:

Soon, you'll be able to obtain a cat genetically modified to be hypo-allergenic for only $3500.!!!!
eek!
Ok, so if I was deathly allergic, I probably would do this, if it was the only way I could have a cat. Though I'd try one of the rex breeds first. Still. It's kinda creepy...I guess all new tech seems that way at first. I wonder, though...the mods are to the protien structure in the cat's skin that gives off the dander. Presumably this plays some benefit to the cat...wonder if the mod kittys will be prone to delicate skin at all?

*licks Jackel onnna nose*
wauggghhh... I'm so glummed that Pounce's eye hasn't healed yet. But glad he is one the road to recovery if not there yet.
yow... genetically altered cats. I hope this isnt' harmful to the cats. I'm allergic to cats *^_^* But I suffer mildly and with not a lot more help than a few benedryl tabs now and then.
I still snuffle my kittens. Loooove to snuffle snuffle them *^_^*... Ramses always smells like sweet sun warmed grass, and Wind smells like perfume, don't know why as I don't even wear perfume...???? and the rest of my cats smell like cats.
okay, speaking of benedryl, which I had before breakfast. it's making me sleeeepy!!! I hope this wet damp weather passes soon. It just makes things much much worse. I'm sick of lethargy and groggy patches.
sleep now

Re: Too Cloudy for the Moon
Date: 2004-10-28 11:21 am (UTC)Hunter's Moon tonite? That's an interesting portent. What exactly makes a hunter's moon?
Pouncie's eye is...icky. =( But there is no infection, which the doc was nervous about, and he seems confident that the eye will heal...enough to talk to me about preventing scarring. Even though baby is still far from cured, I left the vet's with a happy feeling yesterday, rather than the kind of sick depression that I left with the last couple of times.
Pouncival is, of course, like, 'wtf, why do you keep taking me to the vet?! Idontwanna!!!'
Your allergies coupled with your feline family amuse me. ;)
Wind smells like perfume because she has been 'borrowing' your credit cards, padding over to the local stores to buy the stuff, and hiding it in a special compartment they excavated under the floorboards of your house, which is also where Riot keeps his lock breaking tools. She prefers catnip essential oils if she can get them, but also favors Obsession.
What, Bengals, smart?
;D
Re: Too Cloudy for the Moon
Date: 2004-10-29 10:36 pm (UTC)The "Red" color of the moon is special, partly because it's due to the placement of moon in Earth's orbit, and this year more specatacular (or so I hear as I didn't get to SEE it myself... sigh...) because of the amount of ash and stuff in the air because of the volcanic activity that has ash and stuff in the atmosphere.
mmm.. me still jealous!!!
Wind is my fixed black male cat *^_^* heh... he is my lech kitty. He climbs into my lap at the computer desk and nips at my... um... And he KNOWS there is no milk there! Or he'll loll in my lap, stretch out, and pat my breasts. He's the only cat out my entire house that does this. >^Oo^<
Give Pounce a kiss for me, I'm going to go take baby pictures of his baby brother kitten. He's mobile now! Runs around the kitten room in little hops and skip gallops. Likes to wrestle my socks, and my feet in socks (I keep the clean laundry in that room) and sock balls and loose socks are now scattered EVERYWHERE. He is a gorgeous little bit of bounce.
bye the bye... I'm keeping my eye on the mail box. Pounce baby's blue slip should come from TICA soon, I'm expecting it any day now. *kisses your kitty on the nose* I miss Pounce so much! He always let me play with his tummy. Need tummy snuffle. sigh...
