I haven't done a photopost in awhile, I realize. Kyn and I went to the beach this Saturday, it was lovely, and there were photos taken. I also have some neat bird shots I never posted from a walk last month.

Blue things on a stay, watching Kyn and her dogs walk down the trail.

And they zoom! ...um, Bliss is zooming in the opposite direction, apparently.

Bliss and Rogue, aww.

That puppy is growing up.

Luck has the focus of a border collie.

Alas for Coba, all of that focus is for thrown sticks alone.

No room in his heart for the tender advances of a slightly weird little sheltie. Give it up, dude...he doesn't even see you.

Blissdog

Bliss mid-bark (he never barks; I'd forgotten what it sounded like because I haven't heard him do it in something like 5 months) and Coba mid-bounce.

Big young raven

Colliepack

Kyn and collies

so much merle

At the very end of the beach, where the cliffs block you going any farther, we were very surprised when the dogs startled a fawn who was lying behind some rocks. Since we didn't have Jez with us, the dogs who chased responded quickly to being called off, but the poor little thing ran right into the waves. It was very sad, and seeing a deer struggle in the waves was one of those moments of awful beauty that reminds one that life is short and nature is brutal. After a moment, the waves washed it back in and it struggled to its feet, and we could see that its foreleg was badly broken. It must have taken a pretty nasty fall from the cliffs above.

We moved off to give it some space, and when I thought we were far enough away, Rogue, of all the five dogs, including two puppies, that we had with us, Rogue was the one who decided that she wanted to dash back and have another try at the deer. I caught her before she got close to it, but still, we laugh at you, oh fierce and predatory ten-year-old sheltie of the wild.

Face of a predator there, yep. She was extra feisty, chasing birds and being all ruffed up and proud all the way back too, and wanted to play roughly with her toys when we got home.
There is a happy ending for the deer, though. We called the local fawn rescue when we got home, and somebody went out to find it. Its leg has been set by their volunteer vet and its head injuries treated, and assuming that it heals properly, the little guy will be released back into the wild.

And here are bird photos from Scholenberger park last month. I was so thrilled that I actually managed to get the shot of this blackbird feeding his barely-fledged chick. Check out the little guy's pinfeathery tail.

This is a different bird.

Three geese

Flock

Egret in flight

Goldfinch

Ruddy duck! Oh, I squee with delight when I see these little guys with their adorable stubbiness and bright blue bills. Ducks were silly enough as it is, little ruddy drake.
