Weather! And pretty pictures

The weather has been gorgeous this week, sunny and springy and lovely. Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] howl_at_the_sun and her dog came to visit, and we walked up to the ridge. There, we found an amazing three scorpions and a rubber boa, as well as several salamanders and a little guy who might have been a baby gopher snake. Squee!

The 3 or so weeks before that saw some very exciting spring storms that brought trees down on all the lines that bring electricity and the like into my town, so my power and phone have been sporadic.

There are pictures.

The boa! I am so excited when I get to see one.

This scorpion was in the middle (literally) of eating a centipede. Now I like them even more.

And now back in time a couple weeks, to storm-ravaged Camp Meeker!

Mhrhrrr! Nice storm, that! Troublesome, as they tend to be, but... wow. Nice.

That is a -gorgeous- looking area... makes me long for those big tall trees, and the wet air that lingers around them.

It was a beautiful storm; a bit more electrical excitement than I prefer, but no trees came down anywhere near me. Can't complain.

I am blessed by living in a supremely beautiful place, though liking things dim, moist and chilly is a distinct advantage.

It looks so green there! What are temperatures like in winter and summer?

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very green and moist here; a milder version of Pacific Northwest weather than they get farther north, but Pacific Northwest weather nonetheless. Cold winters get down in the 40s-50s, and we only see 90 a few very warm days in the summer.

I could live with that as long as there's adequate shade. I'm not a full sun person by any stretch of the imagination, but I could certainly use a break from wet snow.

What the heck happened?! Was that thunderstorm damage?

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! We get some very exciting storms out here. Thankfully the storm didn't take any houses out this year; two springs ago, a big Douglas fir smashed a house a couple streets down from me.

WHOA holy storm damage. Yikes.

But.. SCORPION. FAT LITTLE SCORP AWWWWWW
and FATTYBOA

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The storm was exciting to be sure.

Yay scorpions! Fatty fatscorp sez: oooh centipede. I think I can get another bite in if I reall...really...try.

Things seem to be well-fed out there right now!

We had the same storm destruction over our way, thankfully my house also avoided any damage.

I'd still love to meet up with you for beers and a hike. This year I have been to the UK, The Virgin Islands, New Hampshire, New York, Orlando and China (and back to CA between each one) ... and it's only just April. Been busy, but it looks like I'm home for at least the next 3 weeks if you wanted to get together. :)

Woah, you have really been around the world this year...very cool! Let me get back to you about that after this weekend...I might have some time next week! It's a shame that the Ace pub is closed, but do you like the Willow Wood?

[identity profile] redstorm.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the Willow Wood, however I've been to the Underwood. Nearby? My usual haunt is the Rio Nido Roadhouse or Stumptown Brewery on the river, but I like to discover new places. :)

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
oooh, we should go to the Stumptown Brewery. I hear that's good.

[identity profile] redstorm.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Love to! Let me know when :)

Scorpion vs. centipede-- no matter who wins, we lose!

great pics.

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahaha, thanks!

Actually, I am definitely rooting for the scorp here; I have something of a soft spot for them, especially the harmless little wood scorpions. Centipedes, however, have far too many legs, and move in a fashion that unnerves me. My girlfriend oh-so-usefully suggests that at least I'm not in a cave in Venezuela, where the centipedes are 10 inches long, venomous and feed on bats. AUGH!!!!!

My mom said the Russian River is the highest she's ever seen it. She was afraid her place was going to flood. I guess it was right up on her back door. That storm looks like it was a nasty one!

[identity profile] summer-jackel.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was afraid that the river would flood as well, but it needs a special combination of storms during high tide to slip its banks. Thankfully that didn't happen this time.

Hm.
I miss the northern coastal highlands.

My grandfather used to pile us into the car once in a while and drive from Anderson to Eureka for a day trip to have dinner at one of the seafood eateries or steakhouses.
3 hour drive each way across the Trinity Alps.

Good memories.

That is really a gorgeous area. I love it up there, too.
