It's raining hard, and I didn't walk the puppy today.
A little indoor play failed to take her edge off;
she followed me into the bath and stood beside the tub,
a lean dark shadow watching with glittering focus
before she splashed the water with her nose and tried to drink it.
Daughter of a Texan summer, she has never minded baths,
though since her second night, she has not joined me.
I wash my hair; the Russian hunting hound reaches her long neck
behind my shoulder to lick my spine. I laugh
when I realize that I am playing in the bathtub with a dog.
