Feeeeeeeshy!!!!!!!!
Jan. 26th, 2005 07:00 pmThe three-spotted gourami is up to about 2 1/2 inches long, is still the dom fish in the tank, but isn't tormenting the others too much. She's easily the prettiest, with lots of really nice blues. All of the fish look really good and are about 3 times bigger than they were when I got them. I'm happy about 'em!
Pouncival was watching them and pouncing at them through the glass this morning. It amused me.
I have given up on the tiny cory cats; I think they are gone. Yesterday, I got two more, an albino and a neat greenish spotty one. They are very visible and very active (I think that the albino's antics were what got Pouncival all interested.) The two new ones herd, and the two old ones herd, but I have not observed much inter-group herding behavior betwixt my small, busy catfish.
I still want another panda one. The pet store had one, but I declined because it was tiny, and I've sworn off micro corys.

Date: 2005-01-27 07:24 am (UTC)I used to keep fish all through high school but quit when I went into college. I wouldn't mind starting another one...but, me money always ends up in buying more military stuff.
I do have a pet frog, though. His name is Phat and he is a African Dwarf Frog. :)

Date: 2005-01-28 07:40 pm (UTC)In my earlier journal entries, I have some pics of the frogs. One (SupaPhat) just recently died, though. He had some kind of parasitic infection which saw him wither away and eventually die. Phat, the remaining frog, looks to be fine. I'm thinking about getting him a companion...but the last time that happened, the frog I got from the pet shop died within three weeks from Red Leg after he leaped out of the tank during feeding, got the infection from the fall (the parasite which causes Red Leg is very common in water), and died. So, I'm a bit wary.
Heh...my abode has a corner which is more of a museum for military stuff than anything. :)

Date: 2005-01-27 08:04 am (UTC)Great seeing you at FurCon -- hope it wasn't the source of the crud you're fighting off right now -- and I really really look forward to being able to keep up with you online more regularly now. ]B=8)
On a topic much more appropriate to the corrent discussion -- I won a 46-gallon aquarium! It'll be arriving next week and I'm going to have to fill it up in the near future (probably with freshwater fish, but we'll see). Any suggestions?

Date: 2005-01-27 03:24 pm (UTC)Wow, congrats on the aquarium---that's great. You will enjoy fishkeeping. I'd say if this is your first aquarium you should definitely stick with freshwater...the saltwater tanks are a lot more complicated, the fish more fragile, and most of them are wild caught. I've always wanted saltwater, but haven't just because of that last factor. If you stick with the "easier" and more commonly kept freshwater fish, they will be less expensive, have better longevity and most of them are captive raised in Asia.
You should read a good book or website about fishkeeping so you know about the nitrate/nitrite cycle, ph stuff and filtration, and about different species. Set up the tank with distilled water and let it run for about a week before adding any fish, which you should add a couple at a time.
I have 2 silver dollars, 3 gouramis, a siamensis (siamese algae eater), 3 cory cats and a big pleco cat. I got 'em because they are really pretty and in the category of fish that tolerate a wide ph level and aren't too delicate.
Good luck!!!
