A white-tailed buck in his velvets just stepped past my office window and peeked in before he walked back into the forest. He was so beautiful. Yes, I love working in Occidental.

Wow! I saw plenty of deer while driving thru Texas, but isn't it a bit late for velvet?

Nope! Velvet is just starting. ^_^ The deer will be in velvet all summer long up north. On the equator it's a different story, where fawning and all different stages of antler growth and replacement can be seen all year round. Since Texas is reasonably warm and mortality of fawns born out of season is lower than in the north, your deer might not be quite so rigid in their hormonal fluctuations...

How cool! I did not know that. Yes, I am in Northern CA, and the deer all follow a relatively strict cycle with the little fawns and the velvet bucks in spring. Usually the bucks are very shy around here until they are done with velvet; I have seen very few, which makes my little encounter this afternoon all the more special. This guy looked to have a really nice rack growing. He was so beautiful and healthy, too. I hope I see him again.

White-tail deer have a very wide distribution, all the way down into south america. 8-)
