I am lately returned from the Trinity Alps wilderness in Northern CA, 7 days of high granite and lots and lots of walking. It was one of my favorite of the many trips I've taken there, although one of the most physically challenging. My calves are in fact still very sore...ow, mooooo!

photos and more commentary behind the cut:

So the reason I am so sore is reflected in the following photos.

They reflect the view from halfway up and at the top of, respectively, Caribou pass. While we got to the granite via Stuart's Fork, the gentlest way into this part of the Alps, but to get to the gorgeous Caribou Lake, one must travel several miles straight up the exposed face of the mountain. The pictures don't quite express either the beauty or the *frikkin' steep*.

Pryde, Jez and I contemplate Sapphire and Emerald lakes on the way down from Caribou. These are some of my favorite places, though we did not hike to them this time around. It was very comforting to see them, anyway. Did I mention that this climb was steep and hot, and that I am still sore from it?

[livejournal.com profile] lythir and I and assorted pack-carryin' pooches. I was very impressed by her pack carrying capacity. She hadn't been packing in years, and never anything quite like this, but she comported herself with characteristic toughness and grace. And, a plus, she apparently dosen't hate me for taking her up over that mountain!!!!

Chris and I, getting ready to head back down the pass.

Chris on top of the pass, being silly and trying to give us a heart attack. But this pic expresses, IMHO, my lovely boy's personality...all too well. ;)

And dog pics, pretty Jezibel:

And a very tired, very happy Jackel having recently splashed about in the river which lies blessedly at the foot of the climb.
