Kyn and I had a wonderful time at the Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park yesterday. It's really a fantastic museum and aquarium, and is always good for the cephalopods. This time, it boasted dwarf and flamboyant cuttles, chambered nautilus, a giant Pacific octopus and an absolutely adorable, very active little coconut octopus. I managed a couple of nice photos of some of these.

Octopus (a love poem)

Curled careful beneath stone, she sensibly
remains discreet, softness protected as necessary.
She will take what shape she wants, and when; she notices
what is relevant to her world, and acts according.
How breathless, to see her graceful tentacle extended!
How splendid she is in her element!

NoPo is a bit challenging to focus on tonight! I rode a long while, though. And groomed the shelties.

Sepia ink was originally obtained from cuttlefish, 'sepia' being the generic name of said cephalopod. When used on paper, the stuff is...sepia colored.

Ok, so now the stuff is edible (questionably, IMHO. At least, octopus ink is eaten on pasta...) and an art supply. Obviously, I need to go do something interesting with this information.

I am working on a few cuttlefish pictures, although so far I still vastly prefer to draw octopodes. Maybe I should ink them in sepia (artificial, of course ;) out of homage.

It's a hard toss-up as to which is my favorite cephalopod: the Humboldt squid or the Pacific giant octopus? Or a smaller, more delicate species of octopus? Well, I may be vascillatory with regards to my octopodes, but the squid thing is an easier decision. 'Cos Humboldts are just darn interesting.

Anyway, here is a vastly entertaining article about that noble beast, the Humboldt sqiuid.

I'm gonna be on the lookout for Northwest tree octopodes now. :P

EDIT: The CephBase site has VIDEO.
