Back from BayCon
Jun. 1st, 2004 08:25 pmI had a lovely con. It was fun, it's always fun. This year's contingent was Noah, Stormi, JD and Susy down from Portland, with Robynne, Adam, Jacob and Christie...someone I hadn't met up to that point, but really like a great deal...making up the Berkely/Oakland portion of our crew. I must say that having two adjacent rooms, as opposed to one, helped us all to stay a little more comfortable and better organized.
Very cool to hang out with Susy (Aris Marquoni for those garg-fans who may have read her) not only because she's cool but because she's the only one of my fellow Gargoyles fans/fic authors who I ever actually get to hang out with IRL.
The con was quiet and pretty laid-back, but still a lot of fun. Nifty to see people I only see...every year at Baycon. And one very dear friend, Marian, who I have not seen literally in years. She sort of mentored me when I was in high school and part of her trek fan club; a really wonderful lady. I showed up in my lawyer duds, having just filed my writ, and about the first thing out of her mouth was, "wow, you're all grown up." I felt happy, but kinda choked up at the same time, you know what I mean?
Of course, I spent the rest of the con all gothy, but then that's what they're for, yes? I so live a double life now.
Baycon did have a furry party and fursuit dance this year...something it's badly been needing the last two...but it was still much smaller and quieter than it used to be, and I miss that.
Jace did me a sketch of Jackel. 8) eeee....love....
Avalon Rising and Broceliande both gave exquisite concerts that I loved. They are awesome.
My dealer's room take included a pair of Celtic wolfy earrings, a very nifty little figurine of Wolverine running with three wolves who is now presiding over one of my bookshelves, and a whole pile of X-men comics of various vintages that I scored for $1/each. *sigh* my addiction grows. The new stack includes some really cool ones with covers featuring Storm in her mohawk-wearing phase. At which point Adam gave me a startled face and asked, "How far back are you going...?!"
And some Excaliburs, too, just to see what all the hype is about.
So yeah. Baycon. Awesome. I love Baycon. A long weekend of sleep deprivation, however, is something that takes awhile to recover from, so I should really go crash now.
purrrrr

Oooo... vintage X-men! Nifty!!! I remember the mohawk!!! yeeeks I went on a weeks long rant about it, ready to do damage to whoever came up with the idea of cutting Ororo's long silky gorgeous silver white mane. But it was a powerful move and in the long run had a very aesthetic plus side that established Ororo being changeable and able to carry off any hairstyle thrown at her with grace and beauty. At the time it happened though, I agreed with Kitty.
The early Excalibur comics were GREAT -- you want to get the early ones with Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, because in the day they were the shining team supreme of comicdom. Fun, frolicksome, ocassionally heart rending, sexy, breathtakingly fast paced and adventurous. Man I miss that comic book energy.
Well, back to the coal mines... sigh.
meows!

I kinda like punk leather mohawk Storm. =) Although I must admit, the flowy silver mane look is way better. Heh...one of the ones I got is the issue where Storm and Kitty make up, sort of...or at least, she spirits Kitty into the stratosphere in order to confront her. Interesting conversation, that.
I still have yet to sort through the Excaliburs, but they seem neat...I don't suppose a TPB of Excalibur has been issued?
