summer_jackelDuring the course of all this (see below), I managed to see the HP movie.
Was it, objectively, a good film? Absolutely not. It makes no sense if you haven't read the book. Of course, I've probably read that book five times (is my fave HP). And unlike the first two, I loved this movie.
What was bad and dull about it was bad and dull. For what was good about it I'd forgive it anything. It was full of these delightful little details, like the whomping willow and birdies. =) And the little footprints that turn into pawprints while the ending credits roll...watch those ending credits, they are so cool.
Sirius and Remus reduced me to a pile of whimpering fangirl goo. Sirius dog was beautiful and rangy and beat up (even if Remus wolf was kinda pathetic.) The kids playing the trio are amazing (and damn, growing up right nicely, too...). And *Buckbeak*. OMG, Buckbeak.
The CG on his back half was disappointing---the artist made the mistake that a lot of artists who aren't really familiar with horses do, and made the tail a solid mass of hair coming right out of the rump, rather than hair coming off the *top* of a long, slender tailbone. The rest was incredible. Other than a few shots where his butt was kind of off, he was *real*. Stunningly, heartbreakingly beautiful. Buckbeak felt like an actual animal with internal consistency, behaving from instinct that makes total sense. He was, if possible, even better than in the book.
I adore hippogriffs.
So yes, see Harry Potter, PoA. Read it first, but do see it.
