...but I gots 'em anyway, right?

And I have a new hole in my head, too. Specifically, a third piercing on my right ear. (still just the one in the left). I've wanted to do it for a bit, and I'm amused that I was all scared going into it. It's not like it even hurts and not like I can't shift this level of pain into non-pain at will, but I was still nervy.

For any of you keeping track, my piercings now match the cuts in my character Jackel's ears. (she took her most recent notch back in April). So the decision was a little bit symbolic, the rest plain fluffiness.

I'm highly curious about how fast Chris and Lucy notice. I'm thinking 80% chance of Chris noticing in the first 5 minutes that I'm home. Lucy it depends more on whether she's lost in thought, but if she's alert she may notice faster than C.

On a completely different note, saw "Stardust" last night, with a bunch of friends. It was a fun, very sweet movie but Gaiman's lovely story---one of his most gentle, but still resounding with the dark and thoughtful edge that gives his writing so much of its beauty---did not transfer its power and vitality to the screen as well as I'd hoped. Still, if you're fond of fantasy, are a hopeless romantic or have a thing for really gorgeous horses, I would definitely see it. Yeah, I fit all three categories. My people and I are going to see it again next week.

Weirdly enough, I finally watched the made-for-BBC-TV "Neverwhere" miniseries last night, and had exactly the same problem with it. The casting was amazing (OMG Croup and Vandemar! The Marquis de Carabas!), and most of the dialogue was lifted straight out of the book, but it still fell flat somehow. It didn't have the resonance of the novel. Admittedly, some of this was due to general low-budgetude: the Great Beast of London was a yak wearing a mask, for Dog's sake.

"Stardust" is playing in Petaluma, so I'll almost certainly see it this weekend.

The movie was definitely not the book(s). I loved it as a movie, and truth be told I'm glad I hadn't read the book recently enough to rate it as an adaptation until after I came home from the theater.

It would have been beyond awesome if they'd managed to stay more faithful to the source material, but a great deal of what gave the books their subversive charm are things that would never have made it past the movie executives anyway -- like Tristan and Yvaine's permanent injuries and the bittersweet ending. The things that the movie added as a replacement, however, I think held up rather well (except the very final climax, but by then I was hooked anyway).
