FYI for those of you not in CA: Measure 8 is the bit of evilness on the ballot now that would nullify same-sex marriages and prevent future ones in our beautiful state. I'm tucked away in a happy little liberal oasis and so I have been spared seeing the vomit-worthy 'Yes on 8' signs anywhere near my home until today. *

I'm trying to decide whether stealing all of these signs I can find and burning them is immature and beneath me or whether I should let Pryderi pee all over them first.

Phone-banking against it would probably be more useful, and I'll more than likely start doing so later this week. I hate politics, I loathe initiating conversation with strangers. I have a serious telephone aversion. I'm going to do it anyhow. Someone ought to suffer for this.

While we're on politics, I just watched a bit of last night's debate (yawn) and was very impressed...in the most unfavorable possible way...by his scowling and grimacing-faces during Obama's speechifying. To say nothing of his even worse behavior previously. [livejournal.com profile] starchy Does a better job than I would of explaining why I'm pissed on a level that goes beyond my personal liberal politics about what's passing for a conservative worthy of respect these days, and why I think you all should be too. When a serious candidate for office behaves like a surly and ill behaved fifth grader, I become concerned. Anger tends to find its source in fear or pain, after all.

* My personal stance on marriage, that it's a kind of distasteful and outmoded legal/social concept, hasn't changed. The probability of me ever ending up in a legal marriage is incredibly slim. Who knows, though, maybe if the right girl was wanting it. Why I care about this issue nonetheless ought to be pretty obvious).

Honesty time: at this point, the whole thing makes me sick and I just want to hide under a rock until it's over (which is even LESS mature than arson or public urination). I'm most deathly afraid of another 2000 electoral-college poochscrew that will drag the whole thing out for months.

And the "Yes on 8" signs are ugly in a way that makes my eyes feel dirty for looking at them. See [livejournal.com profile] illucian's journal for my suggestion.

It would be immature and illegal to boot.
Don't be made into an example of the angry Dem.

I hate McCain. He has the same attitude as Bush and Nixon did. Bush43: "I don't want that phrase used again, 'bad policy'. If I'm for it, that means it's good policy. End of story." Nixon: "When the president does it, that means it's not illegal by definition." McCain can't believe that anyone would be against him, because he's a Good Person (in his own mind) and so anything he thinks and says is Good. Palin is a godly person, full of the holy spirit. Divine right of royalty. Fuck 'em.

You're entirely right and I'm not really going to do any such thing. Just venting steam in my journal.

Your suggestion is quite awesome. And I'm with you about the wanting to hide thing. Can this election please be over already?

I have the same thoughts frequently (trashing signs and so forth) but the second thing that comes to mind is how poorly of an example I would set. Just like McCain's facial expressions last night - I won't do that and disgrace myself. I know you wouldn't either - Just wanted to share that I think the same thing sometimes.

As a mature adult citizen and voter, I think that stealing the signs is the only acceptable reaction. Seriously, this whole thing is so dumb that pro-8 people don't deserve to have their signs respected. If you can get away with it under the cover of darkness, I encourage you to destroy as many signs as possible.

Oh, completely. The last thing I want to do is emulate the astonishingly poor manners of McCain.

I'm at least allowed some petty and vindictive thoughts, though, even if I don't act on them. I'm not running for office...

I have to say I'd lose a lot of respect for you if you did steal signs. Just thinking it is a bit of tarnish.

Reverse the situation: someone steals or defaces your signs-- it's the same thing. Outrageous and (I agree with autarchicflux) a form of censorship that is wrong.

Wait, I'm confused by the second line in the first paragraph. I think we agree here, right? We're both against 8, right?

All the cool kids are stealing signs. You do want to be cool, don't you?

Well, I, at least, understand that you're simply venting by entertaining thoughts of vandalism. The thought of such is theraputic even while the act would be wrong for so many reasons of which you are well aware.

And I'm also totally against the marriage contract entirely and I wish we could have a completely overhaul of the system that eradicated marriages, but allowed for contracts (like business contracts) to merge assets, gain insurance benefits, solidify inheritance rights, etc. But...

1) I know that won't happen and
2) as long as does marriage exist, everyone who fits the criteria for being legal to enter into contracts should be allowed to get married. Period.

The only reason to prevent any class of person from any category of contract is because you think they're not really people, they're sub-human, or otherwise "not worthy".

As [livejournal.com profile] zen_shooter says, when you can show me that gay marriage causes cancer, or somehow infringes upon the rights of people, then I'll see a reason to be against it. Until then, big freakin' deal. I don't care if my next door neighbors are married, why should I care if a gay couple is married?

Measure 8 is horrid, and we have Amendment 2 over here, so I'm totally with you on the need to vomit and destroy property sentiments!

Oh, I completely agree with you and I would never deface a political sign, even one that makes me boil with fury whenever I see it. I do actually believe in the democratic process and respecting other people's opinions...I want to change them, and acting childish isn't the way to do it.

Imagining violence can be theraputic, though.

You do know who is bankrolling Yes on 8, don't you? It's the Mormon Church. They more or less have helicoptered in 10s of millions of dollars from Utah to try and kill same-sex marriage in California. This is a test bed for them: if they can kill it in California, they can kill it ANYWHERE.

And most disturbingly, a whole bunch of very wealthy gay and lesbian people know about this power play, and have not stepped up to the plate with counterdonations. THAT may be what your phone banking could go to good use in. Convincing rich gays and lesbians to fund No on 8, and I'm sure there are organizations that are doing just that.

I've blogged the Prop 8 debacle too, so I'll post something utterly superfluous instead. ;~) Speaking of grimaces, a friend [livejournal.com profile] troubler posted this gem:

"One of these men will be president of the United States"
