Meet the newest pack member

I brought a new baby home last night. Everyone, please meet Outlaws Cobalt Gambit, aka Coba.



And yes, I've been planning this for a few weeks now, but figured it would be a fun surprise here. ;)

He's 9 1/2 weeks old, and a bi-blue merle Shetland Sheepdog of pretty fancy breeding. With luck, I will eventually show the little guy. For now, he's just settling in and adjusting. He flew in from Wyoming with a layover in Salt Lake City, and after an 8+hour flight, he was pretty scared. As of this morning, however, he is full of puppy exuberant energy and playfulness, and he is just absurdly cute. The wolves think so too: I was a little nervous with the intro, but Pryde and Jez were very gentle and affectionate. As far as they are concerned, their alpha female just came out of the den with a new puppy, which is a situation evolution has prepared them for pretty well.

Rogue is being very polite but aloof and will need more time to bond with him. Magic is ignoring him entirely, Nocturne is watching from a distance, and when Tiger bounded up to demand an explanation, Coba licked him on the face. He was mollified.

His eyes are a very vivid blue. I didn't know this until I met him in person.

Usually in blue merles they don't, as I understand, but...who knows. He's actually bi-eyed now, you can see especially in his left eye, he's got some brown. Mottled little guy! :D I'll love him whatever his eyes do.

He's such a fun dog so far. I'm looking forward to seeing him grow and become more confident.

Coba has not attempted anything like that to date. But he was leaping and bounding up the trail this morning with great enthusiasm, which does my heart good. :)

Thankfully I have plush carpet. And puppies are made of rubber, so she just landed in a heap and hopped right up. She then proceded to slide a good three feet once hitting the linoleum kitchen floor.

Only ring stewarding and schlepping grooming tables for friends, unfortunately. I've shown obedience, but not breed. I was a conformation groupie for several years, though. :>

Well, this little cutie should be a breed prospect, depending of course on how he grows out and, mostly, if he stays in size. (Shelties tend to go big, but he's from a line that doesn't have this problem as much as some, and he's been in the safe zone on the growth charts so far). Even at this tender age, his gaits are beautiful, and oh man does he ever have *coat*. I forsee much dog brushing in my future.

Maybe when I show, you can come with. It should be fun to watch me flail and come in last. ;)

I love blue shelties, and I've wanted one for years. Now looks like I've got one.
In that last pic, I just turned on the fish tank filter, which is a bit loud. Coba was all...????!!! whazzat?
Also keeping him still to take any photos wasn't easy. I have a lot of blurry blue blob shots.

Aw! Congrats!!! He is beautiful. I LOVE blue merle on just about any dog, but he is exceptionally pretty.

Blue merle is one of my favorite dog colors, too. I knew that eventually I needed to have a blue sheltie and, well, this little guy became available and I couldn't resist.

In that last pic, he was startled by the noisy aquarium filter being switched on, and wasn't too thrilled that I was making him be still long enough to take a picture. (OMG such a terrible thing to do to a wakeful puppy).

when he gets old enough to shed, he will probably give out about enough coat to provide yarn for one sweater per year. Add that to Pryde, Rogue and Jez and...yeah, potential textiles, I gots em.

Some day, I want a wolf/sheltie sweater...

Some fur doesn't have the crinkles or hooks or whatever it needs to make yarn, so it has to be mixed with other fiber that does. I think it depends on the breed.

My uncle has a Chinese chow dog. Their fur can be spun by itself. I actually crocheted a few square inches of textile once, with an improvised drop spindle and bent wire hook (didn't need to card it). Anyway, if you want an all-dog sweater and don't have the right kind of fur, I might be a source for chow fur.

Awwww, really too cute! I bet he still has that new-puppy smell, too! I know I couldn't get enough of snuffling my new kitten. Maybe it's just pack behavior, getting the smell of the new member lodged in our brains. :)

Oh, he just smells wonderful...I love to put my nose in his so-soft fur. It's definitely pack bonding behavior; I do this to humans I like and trust well enough, too. ;)

He came to me pretty stinky, actually; after an 8-hour plane ride, he smelled of fear. After a bath, though, he's fine.

I just want to point out that I have a kitten and a puppy curled up in my lap. Life's good.
