Laptop back, finally

My new-to-me Macbook came to me with a minor cosmetic blemish on the bezel, near the screen, and two internal problems---the screensaver and desktop couldn't be set, and it had problems waking from sleep. I procrastinated getting it repaired for months, but finally took it in. The fellow at the mac store spent a lot of time attempting to fix the control panel issue, sans success, and they checked it in. When they called me in to fetch it, it turned out that they'd fixed the bezel but hadn't actually even looked at the other problems.
Did I mention that the Mac store is an inconvenient place for me to get to? Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
So, they call me back yesterday...and the notes said no problem was found. Counting to ten quietly in my head (note that the store is always a crowded, reverberating seethe of people which triggers ill-temper in me immediately even without demonstrations of profound dumbness) I demonstrated to the 'genius' at hand that the problem did, in fact, still exist. Without snarling at him. It was hard. I'm glad I didn't, though, because he not only didn't deserve my ire, he actually fixed the problem in 10 minutes and the dratted thing works now. What a nice guy.
I have a very mild soft spot remaining for "Mac geniuses" since I dated one once, though I doubt Josh has any lingering fondness for me. Still, I'm loyal and the ghost of association dies hard. I remain deeply, deeply pissed at Mac itself, though, for the fact that my new ipod will not speak to my old desktop unless I upgrade the entire OS---which is not only a bad idea but might not even be possible. And, I'll add, other than being mildly slow, the ol' emac works just fine, thanks! At least 50% of my desire for this toy was to play with it while riding in front of the desktop. How hard would it be to make all Mac gadgets work on all versions of OSX?
snarl grrr snarlyface growl. OK, time for dance class. Have another cute picture of my dogs.

Date: 2009-07-17 04:19 am (UTC)Shelties are pathetic chewers. But guard your shoelaces. They are one of Rogue's lasting sins.
As for the books, well, Chaos is rapidly learning that the only things he's allowed to chew are what is given to him. I told him 'leave it' with a number of books and he hasn't bothered them; collies learn scarily fast. He is a pup, though, and I'm sure he'll do his share of destroying before he matures.

And the more I see of your menagerie, the more I look forward to meeting them all.

Date: 2009-07-17 05:04 pm (UTC)But all of my Mac friends try to convert me to using a Mac (which they really don't have to do anymore, all I need is the funds, which I don't have and won't have for the forseeable future) by telling me how much more compatible Mac is with other Mac stuff.
One of the biggest problems I had with Vista is that it refused to talk to a whole bunch of my peripherials. I had to buy new ones in most cases, although several months later, new drivers were released for some of the others.
So I'm very interested to hear that not all Mac products work together seamlessly as I've been told. Or, at least, they work about as well as PC - which is if you buy everything at the same time it all works great, but mixing older with newer and there are some things that just won't talk to each other.
Of course, that adds to the expense, since I'd have to buy all new peripherials again, plus certain dongles just to get any new Mac I might buy to do all the stuff my PC currently does. Since the comparable machine by itself is, minimum, 60% more expensive in a Mac, this doesn't bode well for me converting in practice, although I might be a convert in theory.

Date: 2009-07-17 08:02 pm (UTC)My previous ipod worked fine with it. It's this new one...which, coincidentally, will not charge on any of the devices that worked seamlessly with my last one. Grrrrrrr...their older ipod was better!
apple vs pc
Date: 2009-07-25 12:42 am (UTC)now if Apple had 20 inch or bigger laptop, it would seal the deal... I find my 17 inch toshiba satellite too small after my desktop got it's 24 plus size screen. Yes I know a bigger laptop is a monster to lug around, I don't care! like them BIG!!! yes I'm a size queen when it comes to screens... heh heh heh... I want a 20 inch at least, sigh... that can play SL smoothly.

Date: 2009-07-17 07:35 pm (UTC)I was at the beach this morning (went kayacking with my mom) and we saw not only a baby golden retreiver (10 weeks old, all legs and puppy breath!) but two sheltie pups (8 months). My dog envy kicked into overdrive. :P
I am glad your group is so healthy and happy.
