Kaya's First Word

Kaya spoke this morning! I am still reeling a bit.
She'd only been out for about 20 minutes, and I was putting her back in her cage before work. She didn't want to go, and had been expressing this by climbing up the outside of the cage instead of going in, and climbing in a shoulderly direction. I only got her in after several attempts. As I was turning to leave, looking directly at me, she calmly said "No No."
...really.
It wasn't as clear as some parrots speak, but that was definitely what she said. Gavin will occasionally say "Bird" and "Ginny" and mimic the cadence of a human conversation, but this is the first time I've heard Kaya say anything and the first time one of my birds has used speech appropriately at me.
I actually try pretty hard not to say "no" to the dogs, because they don't abstract the way we do and it is much more effective to teach a specific command to check each kind of transgression. (For instance, I try to use "silence", "drop it" and "leave it" for 'stop barking', ''put that down' and 'go away from that' respectively; they work much better). Still, I'm only human, and relatively often tell them "no" anyway, although I'm pretty certain it only communicates "uh-oh, Jackel's pissed, not sure why, better pay attention." And I've been known to say "Kaya, no!" after a particularly shrill squawk.
Guess she was listening and taking notes. eek!
