I will freely admit that I've always been a bit fond of spiders, and have quite a lot of love for tarantulas beginning with Gala, the rose-hair that I kept when I was in high school. This fondness applied to random spiders I might encounter in general, however, has been enough at odds with the opinions of most of the people around me that I'd gone into a holding pattern of "politely ignore them unless it's strictly necessary to remove them to the outside." My lady-friend, however, loves spiders the way that serious birdwatchers love birds, so under her influence I have been paying more attention to them. I'm glad of that; they really are quite beautiful and fascinating, and gratifying to a wildlife-watcher and wannabe photographer because unlike big mammals and birds, there's nearly always one about.

Which brings me to this morning, when I noticed this little jumping spider on the door of my truck. I've never seen one like this, but that could easily be because I have been deliberately not looking, which is too bad because geez, this is an adorably kittenish little thing. Kyn, consider this your get-well-soon spiderpic. Please let me know if you can identify it.

"Hi! You can't possibly be scared of me, can you? I am tiny and fuzzy and have big anime eyes."

Wee jumper.

This is a different spider, a little white orb weaver.

OK, so maybe you're not impressed by the spiders. The puppies are also cute.

Photobucket

Brace of collies!

Rooster SWIMS. He water retrieves. I laugh and laugh, because he is a rough collie and as a breed, they really do not do that. Bliss and Coba, for instance, are Very Concerned when I swim. Kyn is going have fun grooming that when he is a mature male in full show coat and decides he wants to retrieve a stick from a body of water elevendy zillion times.

Pics from a different night, because puppies aren't allowed in my bed unless they are completely clean and freshly groomed.

Pretty colliehead. It is long and smooth and nice to pet.

Plush animals that are actually dogs.

I ADORE spiders, especially the fuzzy ones with the big eyes and iridescent fangs!

Even by the standards of cute fuzzy big-eyed jumping spiders, this morning's little friend was OMG CUTE. Really hard to shoot, because she was so bitty, but I'm pleased to have gotten that one looking-at-the-camera, kind of in focus AWWWW shot.

It's a Phidippus spiderling! Looks really well-fed, too. She's pretty similar to the one I found on the car on Tues.; wouldn't surprise me if there was a gang of 'em around your place. They go through a lot of molt stages, with different patterns: here's a subadult from my yard earlier this spring, and here's an even younger one from a different species on Bugguide.

Your bed looks Extremely Comfortable, as beds should. And thus, an absolute magnet for fuzzy critters.

Our border collie mix also gets Deeply Concerned when we go into water, and is not very fond of it himself. Eventually he'll leap in and try to 'rescue' us... which I'm sure begins as the finest of all possible intentions... and generally winds up with him trying to climb up on our heads.

I've always worked on the theory that spiders earn their keep as bug-hunters -- so they can stay in house. But if they start wandering around in the open and scare some of my more skittish guests, then they get evicted. I'm all for symbiosis, but they have to play by my rules.

I second this. I am arachnophobic but also highly logical. If I can't see it then I am content to pretend I don't know that they are around. I'll even close my eyes and walk away if they are simply in transit. But webs in my bathroom or kitchen (or anywhere else I inhabit really) ... not cool.
