Welcome, Aria's Into The Woods Derzhava!
Sep. 1st, 2011 05:15 pmThis enchanting little creature came to live with me a few days ago.

Derzhava is a Borzoi, girl #3 from the Aria kennel's Broadway musicals themed litter. Although I've been planning to add one to the pack for a couple of years, I am still surprised that this managed to happen so quickly. Serious about obtaining a show prospect, I contacted a couple of our most successful breeders and asked to be put on their waiting lists. Honestly I was expecting to wait up to a year for a pup, if the top people were even willing to talk to me. Aria happened to have a show quality bitch from this litter, and she's even one of my favorite colors in the breed, and I had to jump at this unexpected opportunity. I am very grateful to her breeder for entrusting a newcomer with such a beautiful and promising girl.
She's an amazing little creature; sensitive, subtle and intelligent. She had the misfortune to endure an 11 hour flight just as she started one of the expected puppy fear periods, but the manifestation of that is not fear of things or people. In fact, she's an unusually bold pup for 11 weeks. She is a very tactile little hound and has expressed her nervousness by wanting to be either in my lap or within three feet of me for the first couple of days of our association; this afternoon and today, she was friskier and comfortable taking more space. I am letting her be clingy as she adjusts, which she appears to be doing admirably.
My other dogs have been fantastic, giving her a lot of space and gentleness, letting her approach them on her own terms and setting boundaries with her gently. When Bliss saw that he was intimidating her, he lay down very carefully so that his head was underneath hers, and she relaxed. I am so pleased with all of them.
The pup is soft and adorable. Here are some of her first pictures.

I wish this was in better focus, but it shows that she already loves to run!

She also loves to sleep. Her ability to tuck all of that leg into a tiny, compact curl of hound is kind of amazing. Borzoi origami.

If you are interested in her provenance and breeding, her mother Rosie and father Sean are both very accomplished in the ring; many of her relatives are lure coursing champions and bear obedience titles as well (which is uncommon in this strong-willed breed). I like the breeder personally and her
hounds are certainly gorgeous; here's another shot that includes her mom. Some of her other relatives are here and here. Sean has received an Award of Merit at the Westminster show for two years in a row; you can see him in the video at 6:02 and at the end.
I have a lot of hope for her showing and performance career, but for now I am just getting to know a lovely, polite and complex little animal, bonding with her, and trying to make her comfortable in her new surrounds.

Date: 2011-09-02 02:45 pm (UTC)Part of the appeal for me is their giant size without the related health/lifespan issues of most other giant breeds. I mean, aside from the fact that sighthounds are amazing in and of themselves.
