Further Confusion 2005
Jan. 18th, 2005 07:58 amThe short version is that I had a wonderful time escaping into the world of furriness for four days. I don't think I've yet been to a furry condition that wasn't complete bliss. I caught up with a lot of friends new and old, ogled many fursuits longingly and drew in sketchbooks into far too late at night/early the next morning. Now, after four days of solid party, I fear that I am badly coming down with some manner of sick, but whether to blame that on the con (everybody was sick/had been recently/knew someone who was, leading to
martes dubbing it "GermCon") or just my immune system being compromised by severe sleep deprivation, I'm not sure.
And if ya want the long version...
Getting there was surprisingly easy and faster than it's ever been, thanks to my decision to drive it 580 to 880 instead of just going straight down 101 like an idiot the way I've been going to this hotel for cons for the last thirteen years. Yep, thirteen years...that's just bloody terrifying, isn't it? Fur Con has only been at the Doubletree (and for its sake I really wish the hotel was still called the Red Lion) a couple of years now, but I've been going to BayCon (and if I really want to date myself I'll mention SiliCon and TimeCon) since I was...erk...fifteen.
Last Baycon, me pal Robynne sat down and did the math and figured that we'd spent more than a month of time in that hotel. eeeeeeee...
That, chatting with John Nunnemacher, who told me that I was an "old School" furry when I told him how pleased I was to see his "Buffalo Wings" antologized, since I remember the original printing in YARF!, as well as telling Melody Rondeau about my recently aquired ability to practice law and having her remember me buying Star Trek fanzines from her when I was fifteen brought about what was, I suppose, my major personal revelation of the con: I actually think I've grown up.
I don't really know how I feel about that, honestly. But since I appear to have managed to become an attorney without sacrificing my essential geekness, I think it might be OK. Maybe.
Of course, spending some time in the creator's lounge with Dave Bryant, who's been my friend for years and who's been furry since '81 put things in a bit of perspective. ;) Still, I'm definitely not one of these mouth-wateringly adorable teen goth/punk types you see floating around at these things. Then again I never was, but we won't go there.
Speaking of Dave, he did a gorgeous sketch of a plane about to crash in my new public sketchbook, the theme of which is 'phoenix.' C'mon, guys, you know you want to draw me a phoenix. So did Heather Alexander...yep, Heather did me a *sketch*...very cool; I only asked her to sign it.
But I digress. Linear, me?
Having arrived, I proceeded to hang my stuff in the art show, at which point I finally met
dustmeat; I'm glad I did, she seems really cool.
javachickn also caught up with me, which was a positive thing, as she and her laddie Devin were gonna crash in my hotel room. They are both great people who made very pleasant and unchaotic roomates, and as a couple are cute like puppies and kittens, or maybe just like puppies since both of their fursonae are canids.
The art show, I felt, was impressive in its quality, with some lovely work in both the general and adult shows. Yum. As far as sales, I did OK...not great, but I made enough to mostly cover my con expenses, which was my goal to begin with. Mostly what sold, of course, is porn (heh..I *knew* that the dalmation/appy one would sell, but I'm a little surprised the Anubis/Kerza one did not). I want to really work on hammering out some of the technique and anatomy issues in my work this year...I know we're a few weeks late on new year resolutions, but I think I need to really pay more attention to the art thing. of course FC always gets me jazzed about drawing; that is after all one of its purposes in my life.
Next year I want to have a few prints made up and snag part of an artist alley table for at least a day of the con...I deeply do not want to be tied to a dealer table, but on the other hand I have the time during the day, and I think I should, at this point, try doing the print and taking sketchbook thing.
Not that I didn't do about a bazillion sketchbooks after hours, which is always wonderful. I got some awesome ones, too.
Excellent conversations were also had with Jace, Ch'marr, MicahFennic,
likeshine,
ilucian,
fireeyes,
pegasus316,
speedyscar,
phar (even if it was, alas, only while she was in (her utterly adorable) suit) and others who I'll probably kick myself for forgetting. It was wonderful seeing and/or meeting all of you, either for the first time in person or for the first time.
So now I'm home, I'm sick and eeek I need to go to work RIGHT NOW and get that discovery that's due on friday out and done....

Date: 2005-01-18 10:13 pm (UTC)As for the sketchbook thing, *giggle*, it was my pleasure. I don't get to share that particular vein of work very often. *guilty snigger* you are now on the list of folks that get to see whenever I draw such a thing. ;D
*prrs n hugs*
